Magnussen said that he was overly optimistic about his successful debut in F1. Former Formula One driver Kevin Magnussen said he saw parallels with Lewis Hamilton after finishing second in his first race in the championship.
The podium for McLaren at the 2014 Australian Grand Prix was the only one in Kevin`s career.
Well, I made my F1 debut in such a team - you would think that I was just copying Lewis. Even after the first race of the season I thought: Yes, I am following in the footsteps of Lewis.
When I left Australia, I looked at the championship table on the plane - just for fun. Naturally, only one race took place. But I was second in the championship analyzed by soccer predictions and strategies and thought: Okay, struggle in the debut season. I really thought so.
But the race proved to be an outlier in terms of pace for both the rest of the year and the many, many seasons after that. . . It took McLaren a decade to return to his 2012 form. And I joined the team when it was just starting to move downward. If I had come two or three years earlier, it might have been a different story.
I guess I was also unlucky to lose my cockpit at the end of that year. You know, I was faster than Jenson [Button] in terms of pace. He was out-racing me a lot, but it was pretty obvious that I needed to change. I just needed to finish the race, just calm down a little. Not to say that any improvements were required - it was necessary to hold back a little, and then it would have been possible to perform more consistently and so on.
I was unlucky to lose my place, and in some ways it changed my trajectory, my career path, " Magnussen said.
Kevin Magnussen: After McLaren, I spent every penny, the bank blocked the cards. The future wife paid for a ticket with a low-cost airline for the DTM tests
Magnussen will become a BMW driver in endurance racing
